Oklahoma
Aldo Spoldi 1990, reproduction of the logo on a plastic panel
The title (it’s a US state) refers to a group called “Bank of Oklahoma”, of which Spoldi was a member, and which held a major exhibition displaying only the replicated logo. Spoldi is a leading exponent of Postmodernism, an artistic pursuit rooted in irony and aiming for a new form of artistic expression outside of conventional norms. Here, he titles the work as if it were a highly resounding advertising campaign. The reference is to Kafka’s book “America”, in which the sixteen-year-old German boy Karl is sent to New York to stay with his uncle to find work. Wandering around the city, he comes across an advertisement for the Oklahoma Theater, which promises employment to anyone, since everyone is an artist. Karl is hired and leaves for Oklahoma by train. Over time, it has become less legible; we offer a legible copy in fresco in Piazza XX Settembre, in front of the church, on the former building of the School.
